The SJI license plate came about as a way to funnel financial support from Washingtonians who love the San Juan Islands to the conservation nonprofits in San Juan County. Funds go to groups such as Wolf Hollow and the Islands’ Youth Corps. Also included are tribal groups like the Coast Salish Youth Stewardship Corps, working on the ground to preserve and maintain these special places. None of these monies go to the governmental organizations managing these settings.
As a WA State License Plate, any vehicle owner can have great art for their car and annually support stewardship in the San Juans! This last year over 1000 license plates were sold, which generated $30,000 in grants distributed by the Madrona Institute, the hosting nonprofit. It is so exciting to see them just finish their first annual granting cycle!
If you are interested in having Nancy Spaulding’s artwork on you car you can learn more about plate and purchase at the Madona Institute website. The more license plates sold, the larger the annual cache for grants! https://www.madrona.org/
